MINI ROADSTER DESIGN EXPLAINS COUPE’ LOOK.

With most new concept cars actually relying on hybrid technology or Electric drive only, there were three traditional concepts cars. The first was a dream car, the Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Super Light. The other two came both from Mini: the Mini Coupé and Roadster, both previewing the spirited design that will set the next Mini “Twin” models apart.

The coupé looks a bit awkward with its uncomfortable proportions between the high belt line, the low greenhouse and the (visually) suspended and raked roof. To understand, and eventually appreciate, its distinctive design one has to see also the Roadster. Indeed the two were presented close to each other on the same platform in Frankfurt and made quite a show.

The completely open four seater “tub-like” Mini-for-sun-and-air-lower makes a lot of sense. Its design is consequent, very British and perfectly Mini; whatever this might mean today.

The coupé is the natural derivative of the Mini Roadster, which on its turn, is a consequent development of the Mini hatchback.

This time too there are plenty of ideas, details, lines, and enthusiasm that, after a bit of discipline by production engineers, will result in another couple of very distinctive and desirable Minis. Mr. Norbert Reithofer, CEO BMW Group, has already proudly announced that they will go on sale starting as of 2001.

Having received a load of original and very interesting images I like to share them with you together with an update of my comments on the Mini Coupé.
