Italdesign-Giugiaro is not slowing down its innovation drive through the car industry freeze but keeps investing and expanding its horizon.

At the Geneva Motor Show, the famous Italian design-and-engineering factory will surprise everybody with the prototype of supercar, driver by a series-hybrid powertrain that combines a small and lighter Wankel multifuel engine as an ultralow fuel-consumption generator running at constant-speed and maintain the charge of the ultra-efficient high-performance package of electric motors.

The drive-train system is designed to drive each wheel with its own electric motor, thus benefitting of all-wheel-drive acceleration, grip and stability.

The sketch release by Italdesign-Giugiaro suggests the new prototype, presented as the fastest and eco-friendly sports car so far, suggest that this is a development of the superlative Italdesign-Giugiaro Alessandro Volta, introduced in 2004 and designed to use Toyota parallel-hybrid technology from the Lexus RX400.

The 2009 Concept-car currently being completed at Italdesign-Giugiaro facilities in Moncalieri has been developed in association with the British Frazer-Nash Research Limited, who are world leader in vehicle Hybrid Power technology, and is based on most advanced innovations in the areas of mechanical engineering, motors developments and electronics.

The structural body and chassis of made of highly efficient carbon fibre composite with some body panels made of light aluminium as to maximise the weight of the sports car. Italdesign say that its ultimate concept-car, still to be given a name, is estimated to exceed the speed of 300 kph/ and sprint from zero to 100 kph in 3.5 seconds and yet claim CO2 emission in the area of 50 g/km.

The company does not say whereas the engine sound will be enhanced and used to maintain some of the thrill of traditional (internal combustion engine) sports cars.

Italdesign-Giugiaro and their partners from Frazer-Nash will be unveiled their concept-car on March 3rd at 10:35 on Italdesign exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show.
